Musings and Mumblings

Well, It Broke, At Least?

Blaugust, aquarium, crafting, oops

I have very little fear in life, of doing much of anything. I'm smart, I'm coordinated, I have youtube, what could possibly go wrong? I've fixed plumbing that way, and learned about various gardening things, and generally me and my hand tools get a lot done with very little. So, today, when I realized that my aquarium lid not sitting in the right spot due to the plant pots I'd hung in the corner was causing water to escape the tank and drip behind it, I figured "oh, I'll just cut out some holes, then!". These would be Famous Last Words.

I looked up "how to cut acrylic" and compared the advice in a couple different places. It seemed to me that I could score it with a utility knife, and put some pressure on it, and it would crack along the line, no problem! So, over my lunch break, I grabbed my knife, some clamps, and some painters tape to mark my lines, and got to work!

It turns out that the scoring isn't too hard, but since the shape I cut out was NOT just 1 straight line, but instead a square... Well. Learning Happened.

An over-top view of my aquarium, with greenery coming out both of the front corners. the acrylic lid across the top is pretty very dirty, and also held together by 3 long stips of blue painters tape, as it is cracked longways like a hotdog bun.
...and now my lid is held together by painters tape and super glue.

This is not the disaster it seems like it might be, even though it's annoying... There's a couple of local places that will custom cut acrylic for you, so I pulled up my trusty OmniGraffle, and drew out exactly what I needed (mostly, I seem to have flipped the corners, but since I can move the plants, I don't really care), and sent it off to one of them. Hopefully I'll hear back, soon, as classy as this fix looks, I'd like a "tighter" seal, 'cuz I'm losing a LOT of water to evaporation... although the plants aren't minding the humidity!

A scale diagram with dimensions listed for the lid in question. it's 15 inches by 6 3/8 inches, and has a 3 inch square cut out of one corner, a 2 inch square out of the other, and a 45 degree bevel on a third.
This is what I was going for. Not Even Close.
